Kelvyn Anderson

Kelvyn's work is based on very old artifacts and cave drawings which often predate Maori settlement by thousands of years so they have a very raw chunky feel to them.
Prior to the Maori the Moriori settled the Chatham Islands and some also lived on mainland Aotearoa.
The small mainland tribes were wiped out by the Maori and now very few part descendants still live in the Chathams so it is a rapidly dying race.  Researcher Michael King has written about early Maori and Moriori and illustrated their cave art and carvings in detail. Kelvyn and his close friend artist Theo Schoon have together spent countless hours drawing and researching ancient Aotearoa rock art
and this research has formed the basis for Kelvyn's amazing works in Pounamu.  Most of his carvings are faithful representation of ancient Maori and Moriori artifacts and art.

*** Stock clearance specials in this gallery ***

These special carvings are mostly custom or limited edition pieces that will not be repeated on our site and therefore do not appear in our stock catalogue. Some of the basic "designs" may be repeated but the colour, pattern and texture of the special jades from which each is carved makes most pieces very unique.

Once each piece sells it will be removed from our site permanently.

Please Note - Some examples on the jade pages show the carvings with a degree of back lighting to illustrate their luminosity.
This is how they look when held up to a light so they may appear a darker shade of green when held in the hand or worn against the skin.

All carvings are supplied complete with a traditional style cord & bag.
Most cords are hand made from black waxed braid with a loop and bone toggle fitted. A woven flax presentation case and information on the meaning of the design is also included.
Cords & Packing Detail

Fast airmail shipping worldwide is now just US$6.95 for up to 5 pendants.

The Waka is commonly known as a canoe but in reality Waka means "Sacred Vessel"
The Maori long canoes were very sacred and carried the spirits of the warriors and chiefs who carved and used them.  Waka or carved wooden containers were also used for storing sacred items such as ceremonial Huia feathers "Wakahuia" bone needles and spear tips, and carvings
The great war canoes are actually WakaTaua, outrigger canoes are WakaAma, Ocean going canoes are WakaTete and your true home or place of origin is Wakaianga.  The abstract canoe shaped Waka that Kelvyn carves represent a sacred vessel for the spirit when touched, gifted or worn by family and friends.  It is a way of having part of the spirit of a loved one with you when you are away from that person and the canoe shape itself also represents travel.
