Stanley Nathan

Stanley is a true traditional style carver working in both bone and jade.
His designs are deceptively simple in form but embody the power and grace of his Maori heritage.  He is a master of the traditional methods and has a great love for the old ways when it comes to both the styling and the complex bindings which are a feature of his work.

Stanley has also been a teacher of his craft and spent much of his time mentoring underprivileged youth, giving them not only the gift of a craft passed down for centuries by his ancestors, but teaching them about their own heritage and the pride they should have in their culture.

Bone Hei-Matau Featuring Complex Traditional Bindings

These are the large and intricately bound traditional Hei-Matau often worn by Maori warriors when performing ceremonial dances or greetings and are usually not offered to the public.  They are simple in form but carry with them an irresistible aura of strength and power.
These carvings feature exquisite heavy traditional binding and platted hand woven cords with bound loops and carved bone toggles. They are true examples of the ancient craft.
They are made to be worn but
are equally stunning when framed as art pieces.
